I am a child of the Appalachian Mountains, born and raised in the coalfields of Virginia, USA, where I still make my home. My ancestors emigrated from Wales and settled in these rough mountains because they reminded them of their home. Family is important in my corner of Appalachia, and here we all know each other and who our parents were, and who their parents were, and so on and so forth.
My work has appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies. I have garnered awards for my writing. In 2010, I won first and third place in the Appalachian Author's Guild Short Story Contest. In 2011 I won the Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest. In 2012, my work placed 3rd in the Virginia Writers Club Golden Nib Contest for non-fiction. In 2013 I won first place in the Lonesome Pine Short Story Contest.
Mama's Shoes, my debut novel, was awarded the Mark of Quality by Writer's Digest Magazine. It was nominted for several awards including the Virginia Library Book of the Year 2012 and was a finalist for the ForeWord Review Fiction Book of the Year.
I am a college professor, teaching all manner of writing classes. I am currently revising my second novel. I am married, the mother of three, and a pet lover. At last count, I have five dogs!
